How to Use the College Search Spreadsheet

The college search spreadsheet is for college-bound students and their parents. It is a powerful yet easy-to-use tool to help find and compare colleges.  With 2,500 colleges and over 50 criteria to sort and filter on, you will easily be able to make your list and start comparing colleges. The columns include graduation and freshman retention rates, endowment and endowment-per-student, ACT and SAT scores, acceptance rate broken down by gender, yield rate, undergraduate and total enrollment, male-to-female and student-teacher ratios, rank, percents of students receiving financial aid and the average amount of financial aid received, and teacher salaries. In addition, there are columns for where students hail from: in-state, out-of-state and foreign countries. Four columns are devoted to the ethnicity mix of the student body: percent that are Asian, White, Latino and Black. Four columns outline crime on campus, including the number of arrests for liquor law violations, drug law violations, sex offenses and burglaries. Comparing Colleges has never been so easy!

HOW TO USE THE COLLEGE SEARCH SPREADSHEET

The first thing you need to know to use the spreadsheet is that since the spreadsheet contains more than 50 columns to see them all you must scroll to the right.

3 WAYS TO USE THE COLLEGE SEARCH SPREADSHEET

1.) USE THE SPREADSHEET TO FIND COLLEGES

To find colleges that meet your specific criteria use the filters in the 2nd row of the spreadsheet. For example, if you want to find all colleges in California and Arizona that have between 2000 and 3000  students and have a freshman retention rate above 80%, follow these steps:

a.) Just below the word ‘State’ in the spreadsheet header click on the ‘Select’ filter to open a drop-down list. If you do not see the ‘State’ column you may need to scroll to the left. From the drop-down list click ‘Select All’ to deselect all states, and then select California and Arizona. Click anywhere on the spreadsheet outside the drop-down list to close the list, save your choices and update the spreadsheet to include only schools in California and Arizona.

b.) Just below the words ‘Undergraduate enrollment’ in the spreadsheet header type into the white area: 2000..3000.  Do not include commas. If you do not see the ‘Undergraduate enrollment’ column you may need to scroll to the left or right. The spreadsheet will automatically update to include only schools in California and Arizona that have an undergraduate enrollment between 2000 and 3000.

c.) Just below the words ‘Freshman retention rate’ in the spreadsheet header type into the white area: 80..100. Do not include the percent sign. If you do not see the ‘Freshman retention rate’ column you may need to scroll to the left or right. The spreadsheet will automatically adjust the colleges shown to reflect only schools in California and Arizona that have an undergraduate enrollment between 2000 and 3000 and a freshman retention rate above 80%.

***You  can apply as many filters as you want to narrow down your list of colleges.

***To clear the filter, remove the text in the filter box or in the case of a drop down filter click ‘Select All’.

***To clear all filters, click the ‘Clear Filters’ button below the spreadsheet.

2.) USE THE SPREADSHEET TO COMPARE COLLEGES

Once you have your list it is easy to compare colleges! Click the checkbox in the ‘Compare’ column for those colleges you want to compare. If you do not see the ‘Compare’ column you may need to scroll to the left. Then click the black box in the 2nd row of the ‘Compare’ column twice. This will cause only those schools you selected to show.

3. ) USE THE SPREADSHEET TO LOOK UP STATISTICS FOR A SPECIFIC COLLEGE

In the white text box just below the word ‘School’ in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet, type part of the name of the college. For instance, if you would like to see information for University of Florida type ‘flor’ into the input area and all schools that contain ‘flor’ in their name will appear in the college search spreadsheet.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Change the order of the columns by clicking and dragging a column’s header to another location.

Change the width of a column by hovering on the line in the header between 2 columns. When the curser changes, click and drag to widen or compress the column.

Columns that have filters applied to them will be highlighted in blue.

Click on a row to highlight it for easier viewing.
